US and UK Caution of Substantial Electronic Visa Security Compromise in Somalia

Roughly 35,000 applicants may be affected, warns the US embassy

A major information leak in the Somali digital visa application system potentially disclosed sensitive details pertaining to tens of thousands of applicants, comprising US citizens, the American embassy in the Somali nation has alerted.

Officials stated had received trustworthy accounts that "anonymous digital intruders" breached the Somali government's electronic visa system, potentially compromising information belonging to at least 35,000 individuals.

The compromised files being shared on the internet include personal identifiers, photographs, date of birth information, marriage information, residential locations and electronic mail addresses, according to a American diplomatic communication published on Thursday.

"This information compromise continues to occur and could expose all private information you enter into the application portal," the UK has also warned travellers.

"Evaluate the dangers when considering application for a digital visa mandatory for visiting the Somali nation."

Administrative Action

Government officials have remained silent on the breach. Nevertheless the government has shifted visa application system away from evisa.gov.so to the new system etas.gov.so, without issuing a public clarification.

"Even though American diplomatic mission in Somalia cannot verify if personal information is part of the compromise, people who have submitted applications for a Somali e-visa could be impacted," the US' statement stated.

Territorial Consequences

The revised application procedure necessitates each person traveling, including those from the autonomous region of the breakaway region and the semi-autonomous region of the northeastern region, to seek travel visas via electronic platforms.

Critics say visitors have encountered extra fees in particular territories, equivalent to double charges.

Regional Dynamics

The northern territory, that announced sovereignty in three decades ago, administers its affairs through independent structures yet hasn't received internationally recognised. Mogadishu authorities insists that the area still constitutes its sovereign territory.

The claimed security incident contributes to ongoing disputes concerning central government and Hargeisa regarding authority over aviation space. While federal authorities regained complete authority of territorial skies in recent years, northern authorities continues to contest this agreement.

Recent Escalation

The conflict escalated further this week when Somaliland's President the regional leader stated the breakaway region would refuse Mogadishu's electronic visa and ordered that aviation companies need to acquire permission from northern authorities before entering their territorial skies.

Nevertheless major airlines have refused to board passengers without federal visa authorization.

On Saturday, Somaliland's Foreign Minister the foreign minister reiterated that "anyone travelling to Somaliland can acquire their visa at the point of entry", saying the federal electronic visa platform posed risks and cautioning that "people's data could be accessed by extremist organizations" because of employing the platform.

Aviation Challenges

The stand-off has resulted in some travellers destined for Somaliland stranded at airports due to rejection at check-in because they didn't have the federal electronic visa.

Hargeisa's air transport representative, Fu'aad Ahmed Nuux, has stated to media outlets that the directives - originally publicized previously - became operational on 10 November.

The minister stated carriers that refuse might be directed to divert, and stated several aircraft had already been rerouted.

Airspace Control Conflict

Footage distributed by Somaliland's aviation ministry seems to demonstrate territorial flight directors providing guidance to foreign aircraft commanders - a development applauded locally as an assertion of northern self-governance.

But the federal aviation regulator insists it maintains exclusive regulatory authority over the Mogadishu Flight Information Region (Flight Information Region), that includes the entire country's aviation space. Officials have directed all aircraft to pay no attention to all directives coming from sources besides federal authorities.

Officials cautioned that not adhering to national and worldwide air transport standards could create safety risks and result in "major judicial outcomes".
